Goal Setting

How would it feel to find yourself at the end of 2012 having achieved all the goals you set yourself at the beginning of the year? Yes it could happen…….read on!
It’s that time of year again that we start to ponder over those goals we set ourselves at the beginning of the year and think about those things we would like to achieve in 2012. Have you achieved all you wanted to this year, did you start off with good intentions that fell by the wayside over the months? Perhaps you want to stop smoking or finally shed those extra pounds for good. Is 2012 the year you will finally overcome that phobia that has stopped you doing things you’d love to do, or will the New Year see you dealing with anxiety issues that have been an all too frequent visitor at your door in the past. Whatever you want to achieve, the key to success is making your goals SMART!
Specific
Measurable
Achievable
Realistic
Timed
Yes it’s as simple as that! Do all the goals you set yourself live up to the SMART criteria? In the past you may have set a goal such as ”I will try to lose weight this year”. A SMART  way of setting that goal would be ”I will lose a stone in the next 3 months by cutting out chocolate and alcohol, walking to and from work and replacing my evening desert with a piece of fruit” That goal is specific (how you will do it), it’s measurable, by the amount you lose, it’s also achievable and realistic (for most people) and it has a timed element with the 3 months.
By checking your goals against the SMART criteria, you will be far more likely to think through goals you set yourself and because they meet these standards, you are more likely to be motivated and successful in achieving them.
So as you set yourself goals for 2012, ensure you and they, are SMART!!
